The Employment Process

Consider hiring a college student on an hourly part-time basis to write your job descriptions. Contact the placement office at the college nearest to you and seek employees majoring in English, journalism, or business.

Whenever appropriate, bypass the recruiting process by using temp-to-perm arrangements with a local employment service. Let them test, screen, and check references on prospective candidates. Make a final offer only after the temporary employee has thoroughly proved himself or herself on the job. If the temp is not working out, let the service make the necessary placements.

But if you would like to recruit employees for yourself think about some of the following points.

  1. Ask your better employees for referrals first.

  2. If you place a newspaper ad, use a blind ad to prevent being bombarded by telephone calls (exclude company name in ad).

  3. Screen candidates over the telephone before inviting anyone in for a personal interview.

  4. Unless you have plenty of experience interviewing people, never do an employment interview without preparing a list of questions ahead of time.

Have a trial employment period of at least three months for all new people. The time passes quickly, so make the effort to evaluate their performance during that time.
